The 35-hour drive proved to be worth it for Minnesota resident, Travis Gienger, who won this year’s Safeway World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off in Half Moon Bay!

He won the grand prize of $16,450 for having the heaviest pumpkin this year at 2,350 pounds!

The prize amount was calculated by a “pay-by-the-pound” system which gave $7 for every pound.

Gienger said he’s has been growing pumpkins for about 27 years.

He attended the Half Moon Bay Weigh-Off for the first time this year with his pumpkin, nicknamed “The Tiger King”, after the popular Netflix show.

Gienger also mentioned how difficult the transportation process was, getting the pumpkin to Half Moon Bay from Anoka, MN.

“We went to the extreme. We wrapped it in wet blankets, tarp over that, air tarp over that. We actually put it in dirt, then buckets of water. Every gas station we stopped, we watered it down,” he said.

“The Tiger King” is the largest pumpkin weighed in North America this year.
