The family behind San Jose’s favorite ice cream, Treat Ice Cream, has announced that after 70 years they are saying farewell to the ice cream business.
Earlier last week, the children of founders , Alfred (aka “Mr. Treat”) and Dorothy Mauseth said they will close the factory o South 19th Street
“We had always strived to provide the best quality at a fair price, and we had always planned to just peacefully close someday,” said Bob Mauseth.
However, fans of the beloved company can take solace that the company will still live on.
Mauseth negotiated with Marianne’s Ice Cream of Santa Cruz to buy the factory’s machinery, then agreed to also sell the Treat name and flavors as well.
“I was somewhat reluctant at first,” Mauseth said about selling the name and flavors. “But the thought of folks being able to still get the same family recipes won me over.”
In addition, three longtime Treat employees will work in Santa Cruz on the Treat production line for Marianne’s.
So while the factory doors close, San Jose can still rest easy knowing that Treat Ice Cream is still here.
Especially with summer just around the corner.
