Due to the success of the Netflix show, “The Queen’s Gambit,” sales of chess sets have been booming!
“Our October sales for chess were up 178% over the same period last year,” said Mary Higbe, director of marketing at Goliath Games. Now, she says, “our chess sales are up 1,048%.”
EBay has also reported a 215-percent spike in sales of chess sets and accessories following the debut of the show, whose follows fictional chess prodigy Beth Harmon as she squares off against male chauvinism in the Postwar US.
Wooden sets have been most popular on the online auction site, selling nine times better than plastic, glass and electronic varieties, according to The New York Times.
“Ever since The Queen’s Gambit launched, our chess sales have increased triple digits,” Elizabeth LoVecchio, a vice president of marketing at Spin Master toy company, told NPR.
