Chicago Residents Startled By “Frost Quakes”

Those weren’t earthquakes that Chicago residents heard and felt this morning. Many were startled by loud banging sounds coming from the ground. They were “frost quakes” which happen when underground water freezes in the sub-zero temperatures and then expands, causing rock and soil to break.
