If students and parents at Woodrow Wilson Elementary School in Richmond have their way, their school will be renamed after former First Lady Michelle Obama.
In a September 2019 letter to the West Contra Costa Unified School District school board, PTA head Maisha H. Cole asked to rename the school.
According to a news release from the school district, a committee will meet this Thursday to consider the request and to hear public input at Grant Elementary School, also in Richmond.
Wilson Elementary is currently undergoing a remodel and has a temporary campus is in El Cerrito.
Last month, a Gallup poll showed that Obama was named the “most admired woman” in the world for the second year in a row. She is also known for her support of education and children.
If approved, the school would be the first in the Bay Area to be named after the beloved, former First Lady.
