Last month, I discovered that an elementary school in Richmond could be renamed after former First Lady Michelle Obama.
Now comes word that the school is much closer to making the name change a reality!
After having held two public meetings to gather feedback from the community, the West Contra Costa Unified School District Board of Education will vote on the recommendation in a meeting scheduled for tomorrow.
The idea to rename the school stemmed from PTA President Maisha Cole, who made the suggestion as a way to honor the former FLOTUS.
The school, which is being reconstructed, is currently named after former president Woodrow Wilson.
If the school board approves the proposal, Wilson will be the first school in Northern California and the second in the state named after Michelle Obama, a release stated. The other school — Michelle Obama Elementary — is located in Panorama City in Southern California.
