Elton John Moved To Tears Over ‘America’s Got Talent’ Contestant’s Performance Of “Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me”

Never one to hold back his feelings, Sir Elton John let the tears fly after hearing the story of one contestant from America’s Got Talent.

During yesterday’s premiere of AGT, John was treated to hearing Archie Williams, 59, channel his experience of wrongful conviction into a powerful rendition of his hit, “Don’t Let The Sun Go Down on Me.”

Williams was sentenced to life without parole in 1983 at age 22 for the rape and stabbing of a 30-year-old woman, despite his alibi and a lack of evidence. His case was taken on by the Innocence Project in the 1990s, and a fingerprint analysis last year ultimately proved his innocence. He was released from prison in March 2019.

“DNA freed me,” Williams told judges before pouring his heart into his performance.

His tear-jerking performance not only granted a unanimous spot in the next round of the show but a standing ovation and a hug from Simon Cowell.

“I will never, ever listen to that song in the same way ever again after you sang that,” Cowell said following Williams’ performance. “This is an audition I will never forget for the whole of my life, Archie.”

America’s Got Talent airs Tuesday nights on NBC.
