Google is now turning some employees into detectives, Bike Sleuths. They’re trying to track down those “free” bicycles provided for workers to pedal around the huge Mountain View campus, but everyone in the community seems to be “borrowing” them. Even the mayor has admitted cheerily to taking a Google bike home overnight.
After numerous losses, between 100 and 250 a week, Google outfitted the bicycles with GPS devices, and 30 helpful workers located several bikes in unexpected places. One was found in Mexico. Another was spotted on TV in a Garnier Beauty commercial. They definitely get around.
It seems that a lot of folks take them innocently believing that they’re up for grabs on a temporary basis, and maybe they are, but instructions may be needed. Maybe it’s time for Google Golden Rules: Thou shalt return thy bicycle, and Thou shalt not toss thy bike on the roof of O’Malley’s Sports Pub. Sigh–that’s where one bike was found.
