John Fogerty‘s 50 Year Trip: Live at Red Rocks concert film was released on DVD this past Friday. As previously reported, the flick documents a June 2019 concert that the ex-Creedence Clearwater Revival frontman played in Morrison, Colorado, that was part of his My 50 Year Trip tour.
That concert, like the others on the trek, featured plenty of classic CCR tunes, Fogerty solo hits and a special set of songs that various artists performed at the 1969 Woodstock festival.
The 74-year-old Rock & Roll Hall of Famer tells ABC Audio that it was his wife Julie‘s idea for the Woodstock set, which celebrated the historic fest’s 50th anniversary.
“For me, even though it was a lot of fun…I really wasn’t as aware of…the urgency or even the necessity of that, as Julie was,” John explains. “And I think that really helped propel the show along…[I]t just seemed like I got to the end [of the show] without even realizing…that it was all over so soon, because it was fun.”
Fogerty also admits that he didn’t realize how well the show was working until he got to check out the footage shot for the film.
The concert ends with an interesting rendition of CCR’s classic tune “Proud Mary” that adds soulful horns reminiscent of Ike & Tina Turner‘s hit 1971 cover of the song.
“[I]t’s a bit fun and perhaps a little bit of irony, I suppose, to have me, the songwriter…doing a little nod to an arrangement that came from someone else,” Fogerty tells ABC Audio. “But I’m very comfortable with that. I love Tina’s record, of course, and it’s…fun to do it that way.”
