Don’t look now but Kristen Stewart has just landed a role as Princess Diana.
Deadline reported Wednesday that the film, called “Spencer,” will have Stewart playing the Princess of Wales while she was going through her divorce from Prince Charles, and began her life away from the British royal family.
The casting of Stewart as Princess Diana and fans has been received with mixed reviews. It’s the second time someone not from the UK has been cast to portray Lady Di.
However, the film’s director, Pablo Larraín, defended Stewart’s casting.
“Kristen is one of the great actors around today,” Larraín told Deadline. “To do this well, you need something very important in film, which is mystery. Kristen can be many things, and she can be very mysterious and very fragile an ultimately very strong as well, which is what we need. The combination of those elements made me think of her.”
The film is set to begin production next year.
