I have to admit, being stuck at home without sports has been brutal. It’s the reason I even own a TV in the first place. The fact that I can’t flip on the game and kill 3 hours is unacceptable. Oh, I get it. We have to flatten the curve and do what’s best for people. Social distancing works even though it’s hard. It still doesn’t change the fact that not having any sports in my life is hard.
I’ve noticed over the years that I have become less and less of a baseball fan. Baseball was my life when I was younger. I was either playing it or watching it. I was a huge Oakland A’s fan. Rickey Henderson and the Bash Brothers we’re always so fun to watch. Over the years my passion for the game has lessen mostly due to the lack of an even playing field. Major League Baseball is a game of the haves and the have nots. When the Yankees can spend $250 million on their roster and the A’s can only spend $80 million this creates an uneven playing field. Other leagues have fixed this by having a salary cap but not baseball. Watching the A’s let go of players because they can’t afford them has been hard.
Here is the thing, I’m so starved for any form of sport that I will watch anything. So, when I saw that the MLB season could start in early July I damn near did a victory lap around my place. That’s right, baseball could be back. The Major League Baseball owners have sent a plan to the Players Union with the goal of have the season start in early July. The games would be played in crowd less stadiums until a time that it is deemed safe to bring the crowds back. Of the 4 major sports i would think baseball would be the easiest to play and social distance. It’s a long way to home plate from the outfield. Now the players union would have to sign off on this but hey, there is a shot.
It’s now time for Kirk to be a Pessimist. I personally believe there will be no sports this year. The risk is too great for the players and the leagues as a whole. All it takes is for some big name to contract Covid-19 and then die for this to be a huge mistake. A lot of people have been pinning their hope on the Coronavirus not being able to survive during the warm summer months. The sad truth is that there is a good chance the change in season will have no effect on the Coronavirus. There is a couple reasons. One, MERS is a Coronavirus that is found in Camels and is mainly seen in the middle east and the heat doesn’t even phase it and two, a recent study came out saying the initial results on if the heat will effect Covid-19 were not very promising. It’s just one test but that is not good.
So, we shall see. I’m still hopeful that the season will happen, that games will be played. It would be a nice 4th of July present to all of us to be able the grill up some dogs, throw 9 innings on the TV and just forget all the Coronavirus for 3 hours. Who know, maybe the Coronavirus will be the reason I rediscover my love of Baseball. Seriously, what else am I going to watch? Tiger King for the 80th time this week.
