Whoever left a piano on a Long Island sidewalk certainly didn’t expect the Piano Man himself, Billy Joel, to give it a go.
A YouTube video from late last month captures Joel coming across an old piano on the side of the road, who instinctively, just had to play it.
He played a little, ragtime tune to the delight of passers by and declared that the piano was still in good condition.
“Not bad. The action is good. It just needs tuning and the finish is beat. But, it’s a perfectly good piano,” said Joel. “It’s a shame to throw it out, should at least be donated to St. Vincent de Paul or something.”
Off camera, someone informs Joel that there is a thrift store up the block.
“They’d probably take it,” said Joel, who closely examines the instrument while still wearing his motorcycle helmet. “These are laminated keys, the pedals work, the action is great…The mechanics are perfect!”
The ultimate fate of the curbside piano is unknown, but hopefully someone was able to give it a good home.
