The Rolling Stones were one of the last acts to perform during Global Citizen’s One World: Together at Home broadcast Saturday, playing their classic “You Can’t Always Get What You Want”.
Mick, Keith, drummer Charlie Watts and guitarist Ronnie Wood each held down their part of the song, teleconferencing in for the tune from their respective homes. Watts kept it low key with a makeshift drum kit made from old suitcases and a wing back chair.
Now as a drummer myself, I can assure you that what you’re hearing is NOT the sound of Charlie playing suitcases. I definitely hear Charlies cymbals and Gretsch drums. Clearly they did some serious overdubbing to make this sound this good. That’s okay, because it’s still really cool!
The iconic rock group was forced to postpone their 2020 No Filter Tour due to the pandemic.
The group effort was organized by the World Health Organization and nonprofit group Global Citizen to honor front-line workers amid the COVID-19 crisis. Mick and the guys were part of a blockbuster line-up that included Beyonce, Elton John, Paul McCartney and Lady Gaga.
The multi-nation, multi-artist concert was aimed at encouraging donations to WHO’s COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund.
