Gilroy Police are warning of catalytic converter thefts growing in the South Bay. Thieves target these emission control units on cars due to the valuable metals they contain, easily sold to recycling centers. All late-model Toyotas are the car of choice for thieves, in particular, the Toyota Prius because it’s a quick rip-off.
Replacing a catalytic converter will set you back $2000 to $3000. Gilroy Police say the thefts in their city have spiked lately and to protect your car by parking inside or in a well-lit area.
