After the recent news that a gender reveal party sparked a major California wildfire, the woman who helped to popularize them is calling for a stop to them.
Jenna Karvunidis, the blogger who is credited with conceptualizing the gender reveal party in 2008, took to Facebook to share her disgust.
“Stop having these stupid parties. For the love of God, stop burning things down to tell everyone about your kid’s penis. No one cares but you.”
In 2008, Karvunidis threw what’s now known as a gender reveal party. After posting about it on her blog, High Gloss and Sauce, the idea was picked up by a local magazine called The Bump.
Last year, Karvunidis was described on Twitter as the “inventor” but since then, her views have changed.
“Who cares what gender the baby is? I did at the time because we didn’t live in 2019 and didn’t know what we know now ― that assigning focus on gender at birth leaves out so much of their potential and talents,” she said in a Facebook post.
Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time a gender reveal party has sparked a catastrophe.
In 2017, a gender reveal party in Arizona sparked a fire that spread to 47,000 acres. Two years later in 2019, a gender reveal party in Iowa caused an explosion that led to one death.
